Yestederay afternoon saw the official unveiling of the gorgeous “Octopus Garden” mural recently installed at the corner of Main and Brown Streets.
54 students from two grade 8 art classes taught by Darcie Doucette at Maple Grove Education Centre participated in this amazing project. The challenge for the students was a big one: create a large mural for a location away from the school, without being able to visit the mural site or have the artist visit the classroom in-person. Doucette and artist Danielle Mahood overcame this challenge by splitting the mural into panels. This allowed the students from both classes to work in small groups on individual panels. The panels would then be combined to create the completed mural.
Danielle taught the students about how to take an initial, small design and scale it up to a large size while maintaining proportions and scale. She also guided the students through colour theory, paint mixing, and blending colours smoothly. The results are impressive. A bright, colourful, contemporary design inspired by the idea of an Octopus’s Garden now greets passersby thanks to the vision of these talented students and the creative efforts of Doucette and Mahood.
The Town of Yarmouth Façade Society Mural Grant Program partnered with partnered with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's ArtsSmarts program to provide a permanent home for the mural in downtown Yarmouth. A thank you to the property owner LG Trask Rentals for providing wall space for the mural. Congratulations to all who participated in creating this wonderful addition to our downtown!
