Key amendments were made to the Town’s Solid Waste Resource Bylaw that affect both retailers and residents.
At the June 11th, 2020, meeting of Yarmouth Town Council, key amendments were made to the Town’s Solid Waste Resource Bylaw that affect both retailers and residents. The changes impact the sale of "compostable/biodegradable” products, as well as collection of leaves and yard waste.
What are the Amendments about?
➡️ These amendments make it a requirement of retailers to receive approval from the Town prior to providing for sale ANY product advertised as “compostable” or “biodegradable” that is a non-food item. This includes green bin bags, cutlery, cups, and other items.
➡️ The amendments also stipulate that leaf and yard waste can no longer be put out for collection in plastic bags.
How Will This Affect Me?
➡️ If you are a retailer, you need to apply for a permit from the Town of Yarmouth before selling any non-food item claiming to be “compostable” or “biodegradable”.
➡️ If you are a resident of the Town of Yarmouth, you can no longer use plastic bags to put out leaves and yard waste for pickup. Please use your green cart or paper bags.
➡️ These changes are part of an effort to reduce ALL types of plastic arriving at our compost facility. The goal is to provide cleaner compost and reduce plastic pollution.
Where Do I Get More Information?
➡️ You can get a copy of the bylaw with the new amendments at Town Hall or on our website at: https://townofyarmouth.ca/town-hall/by-laws.html
