Thursday, December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. This year's United Nations theme is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

Almost one in three Nova Scotians aged 15 and older have a disability, which is the largest percentage of any province. All Nova Scotians should be able to participate fully and effectively in society, without being limited by barriers. The Accessibility Act recognizes that accessibility is a human right, and has a goal of an accessible Nova Scotia by the year 2030.

Accessibility is a top priority of Yarmouth Town Council. An Accessibility Committee has been created and a number of citizens have put their name forward to participate as members of this committee and develop the Town of Yarmouth's first Accessibility Plan. At present, a nominating committee is making a recommendation to Council, with appointments to follow next week next week.
