Town of Yarmouth Introduces Interactive Online Mapping Tools

New tools are now available that make it quick and easy to access zoning maps and information, and view the status of ongoing development applications

Thursday, February 24th, 2022 - Yarmouth, N.S. – The Town of Yarmouth’s Planning and Economic Development Department has launched two interactive mapping tools that are time-saving and user-friendly. The new tools can be found on the town’s website, and are designed to make it easy to understand land-use zoning for developers, business owners, and residents. The tools also help make the development process easy to follow by offering information on all development applications being considered by the town.

The first is an interactive zoning map that brings together the town’s land use zoning map and the Land Use Bylaw with just a few clicks. By entering a civic address or directly clicking on a property within the map, a user can quickly determine what businesses or services are permitted to operate at that location. A simple pop-up window provides property details, land use zoning information, and a direct link to a bylaw PDF document with more zoning details.

The second tool is an interactive planning map. The map helps to visualize where and what type of development activity is occurring in the town. Users can see what planning applications have been approved, as well as those that are going through the development application process. The tool also works to show the growth of development in certain areas of town, which may help to attract more development and investors to the community.

Natalie Smith, Director of Planning & Economic Development for the Town of Yarmouth, sees the tools as a big step forward in simplifying the development process.

“We have made great efforts in recent years to make the process as painless as possible for developers, and these tools will help speed up the process for everyone,” said Smith. “Developers can quickly get the information they need about specific areas in town and people can now easily research where to locate their business, service, or home-based business. We are excited to offer these features on our website.”

Both tools were developed by Esri/ArcGIS and work fluidly across a variety of platforms, including mobile. A number of other municipalities in Nova Scotia are also offering these tools including the Town of Truro, Colchester Municipality, and others.
