Communities in Bloom, Town Parks Department Introduce Downtown Planter Program

Thursday, June 13th, 2019

The program gives the downtown an extra boost of colour and beauty by allowing businesses to rent ready-to-go planters for the summer.

As Yarmouth is set to host the 2019 Communities in Bloom National Symposium & Awards next September, extra efforts to add more colour to the area will happen this summer. One of those efforts began this week with the introduction of a planter program designed by Yarmouth Communities in Bloom and the Town of Yarmouth Parks Department.

The program came to life early this year and received a positive response from downtown businesses. For a rental fee $85, businesses along part of the hanging basket route between Parade Street and Forest Street could apply on a first-come, first-serve basis to improve their curb appeal by adding one or more of the planters to the front of their premises. Participants had their planters delivered this week and will enjoy the extra touch of beauty they bring until the end of September.

Coastal Financial Credit Union received two of the planters. Branch Manager Darryl LeBlanc sees the program as and ideal solution for dressing up their space on the street. “As a member of the Business Community, we were very pleased to hear about the planter program implemented by Communities in Bloom & the Town of Yarmouth. We are always looking for ways to improve our visual image and adding the planters is a subtle and cost efficient way to brighten up the premises.”

Wade Cleveland, Councillor for Town of Yarmouth and Chair of Communities in Bloom Yarmouth said “We're very excited to see how enthusiastic our merchants have been about this new program. It is always our goal to add beauty and greenery in the downtown, and in all parts of the town. A huge thank you to everyone who got behind it.”

As a bonus to renting the planters, Parks staff will provide all watering and maintenance as part of the hanging basket maintenance schedule. The units also feature an innovative design that allows it to store water in a reservoir below the soil line to help keep the soil moist. Each planter was pre-designed and planted by Alice d’Entrement of Ouest-Ville Perennials.

15 planters were made available for this season and as of this date all have been rented. Any business seeking more information or to inquire about renting for next season, may contact Town of Yarmouth Parks & Facilities Supervisor, Todd Muise.
