In 1995, Nova Scotia became a World Leader is waste management by adopting the Solid Waste-Resource Management Strategy. When the strategy was adopted, the province was split into seven different regions to make managing solid waste easier. The western region, Region 7, has a population of approximately 46,000 and includes 22,000 households. Waste Check formed an Authority made up of two municipal representatives from each of the six municipal units it represents. Region 7 includes the following municipal units:
The tipping fees help cover the cost to run and maintain the transfer station. Tipping fees are charged to those companies who bring waste to the transfer station, to companies who pickup weekly household garbage and to any resident who brings waste to the transfer station that exceeds the allowable daily limit.
Transfer Station Fees – Region 7
On April 1st, 2011, the tipping fees will increase by an additional 7.5%. Residents can drop off residential waste up to 200kg/household per week at the transfer station before being charged a tipping fee. Updated September 30th 2011 *Any car motors, etc must have all fluids removed. **Double tipping fee for all materials that are improperly sorted.
