Street Plowing
The Town of Yarmouth will attempt to keep streets reasonably clear of snow. As a consequence of plowing, driveways are generally filled with snow. The Town shall not take any responsibility for removing snow from any driveway due to snow clearing operations.
The Town of Yarmouth shall not take responsibility for repairing fences, hedges, mailboxes, lawns etc., which are damaged as a result of plowing streets and sidewalks if aforementioned items are erected too close to the sidewalk or street; i.e. within the public right-of-way width. Homeowners should be encouraged to keep that portion of their lawn and walkway adjacent to the sidewalk at the same level as the sidewalk.
The Traffic Authority for the Town shall bring into effect temporary winter parking regulations between December 15th and March 31st inclusive of the following year.
Vehicles which are interfering with snow removal or winter maintenance activities are subject to ticketing and/or removal and any associated costs shall be the responsibility of the owner of such vehicles. Towing of those vehicles shall be authorized by the Traffic Authority for the Town of Yarmouth. The Town of Yarmouth will not assume responsibility for damages to vehicles left within the public right-of-way during winter snow clearing operations.
Those private contractors who are plowing snow onto and across public streets and/or sidewalks from private driveways and parking lots and which causes an obstruction or encumbrance to the flow of vehicular or pedestrian traffic shall be warned once and upon further offenses shall be issued a summary offence ticket under Bylaw #8, Streets and Sidewalk Bylaw.
After an accumulation of 10 cms of snow, depending upon the conditions; i.e. wet snow, drifting and at the discretion of the Public Works Department, etc. plowing of streets shall begin and continue until the storm has subsided. It is desirable to wait until a storm has subsided before plowing, normally in the early morning hours. For blizzard or high wind storms, plowing will not commence until the storm has subsided.
Sidewalks
Plowing of sidewalks shall proceed following the completion of the plowing of the streets.
Plowing of sidewalks shall generally be started only after a storm has abated. Sidewalks shall not be plowed if blustering or drifting conditions exist.
Generally, the sidewalks on main thoroughfares and around schools, the hospital and other institutions will be completed before starting side streets.
All sidewalks will be sanded throughout the town after plowing and as required due to slippery conditions.
Regulations
There are certain guidelines that need to be followed when parking your car in the winter. Attached is a document outlining the winter parking regulations. |
