Snow & Ice Control Program Operating Guidelines

It is the responsibility of the Public Works Department to provide snow and ice control for approximately 68 kilometers of streets, 50 kilometers of sidewalks, parking lots and yard areas for the Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Town Hall, the R.C.M.P. building, Fire Hall and Public Works Facility.

The goal of the Public Works Department is to make the streets and sidewalks safe and accessible for pedestrians and vehicles (which are properly equipped for winter) in accordance with the guidelines as outlined below at a reasonable cost to the tax payers of the Town of Yarmouth.

The purpose of this document is to define an acceptable level of service and written procedures and priorities for snow and ice control for streets and sidewalks.

It is recognized that the level of service may be affected by one or more of the following factors:
1) equipment breakdowns.
2) vehicles or equipment disabled in deep snow.
3) severe weather conditions i.e.  Whiteout or blizzard conditions making it unsafe for crews to be out on the roads.
4) crew breaks and breaks required for refueling of equipment, refilling of spreaders and installation of chains or new blades.
5) limitations on the number of hours that staff can safely work.
6) unforeseen emergencies.
