Municipal Registration

Registration is a form of protection for our built heritage which limits the changes which can be made to the exterior of the building but places no restrictions on the interior of the building. It allows for a delay period of one year before a building can be demolished or substantially altered. During this time it is hoped that a suitable alternative can be arranged.

The Heritage Advisory Committee:
  • Receives applications for registration
  • Oversees the necessary research
  • Makes recommendations to Town Council
Qualifications for Heritage Registration

Properties considered for registration on the Municipal level include buildings, sites or monuments whose construction predates 1930. However, exceptional examples which post date 1930 may also be considered. This includes commercial and residential buildings, churches, museums, barns, graveyards, parks or other examples of built heritage. They may also include archaeological sites and landscapes.

Evaluation of properties is based on the following list of selection criteria:
  • Associated with one or more persons of local significance
  • Associated with a group, organization or institution of local significance
  • Associated with a theme or event in local history or is typical of an era
  • Provides an example of a particular architectural style
  • Associated with a notable architect or builder
  • Is an outstanding landmark
  • Construction pre-dates 1830
