Yarmouth has had a long standing love with public fountains. Yarmouth has had several public fountains since the late 1800's. There is a fountain located at each end of Main Street. Their primary use was for drinking water for the local horses. The fountain at the north end of Main Street was placed by Clara Killam in 1893. The fountain at the south end of Main Street was presented by Nathan B. Lewis & Wife in 1895. This fountain was designed and built in New York. The fountain in Frost Park was as popular in the late 1800's as it is today. In the late 1800's, the fountain in the park, at that time called Victoria Park, was a wonderful place for children to play and the ladies to enjoy the day and "discuss" all the local goings on in the town. Mountain Cemetery on Parade Street has two beautiful fountains; the oldest being placed by William Law in 1897. The other is much newer but still just as beautiful. Next time you are near one of these fountains, take a moment to notice the fine and intricate detail on them and how the showering water sparkles in the sunlight. |
